Human Trafficking in Texas

"Human Trafficking in Texas"

This learning module represents a good example of my approach to Instructional Design. I was in charge of the project from beginning to end.

I developed it using the ADDIE model as a reference. The module now is part of the Curriculum for Customer Service Representatives for the State of Texas Driver License Division.

BACKGROUND: 25% of all human trafficking victims in the nation are in Texas. Traffickers often need some form of ID for their victims. Driver License field offices are a key element to identify potential cases.

I started this project by:

  • completing a literature review of the document issued by the State of Texas on this topic.
  • identifying the performance gap by interviews with customer service representatives.
  • researching existing training on this topic developed by other agencies and/or in other states.

THE ISSUE: Field office managers have identified a lack of knowledge in their  Customer Service Representatives in order to identify cases of suspected human trafficking and help the potential victims.

After the analysis phase, I developed a plan containing:

  • a needs analysis
  • my potential audience
  • learning objectives
  • an outline of the module
  • a timetable

The module is composed of:

  • Video presentations on how to spot a potential case and what to do
  • Interviews to a Law Enforcement officer and a Customer Service Representative that spotted a case
  • Scenario of a possible interaction between  a Customer Service Representative and potential trafficker

DESIGN - DEVELOPMENT

For a final evaluation the  prototype was presented to:

  • a focus group composed of customer service representatives
  • managers and main stakeholders

After both presentations the  collected feedbacks were used to create the final product (to be distributed both on-line and on DVD)
