Metamorphosis is a video production containing a collection of interviews with Peer Support specialists from the Austin State Hospital about their experience and struggle with mental illness.
THE GOAL: Develop patient awareness of the peer support program, staff and their personal experiences with mental illness.
BACKGROUND: The Austin State Hospital (a mental health facility) recently decided to create a Peer Support Department. To join this department a direct experience with mental illness is required. Peer Support Specialists daily interact with current patients in order to facilitate and boost their therapeutic experience at the hospital.
THE ISSUE: Because Peer Support is a new department, not many patients are taking advantage of its services. Its visibility and trust level need to increase.
THE SOLUTION: I proposed creating a collection of interviews of Peer Support specialists about their struggle with mental illness. The video is presented weekly during group activities by therapists and social workers.
From planning to post production, I managed the project through four different steps.
I developed the proposal to hospital leadership and organized a focus group with various stakeholders to focus the project direction.
I created a timetable, submitted to and approved by upper management and scheduled video shoots with each Peer Support specialist.
I shot the raw footage of each interview and then edited the material using Final Cut and Photoshop. After a series of approval meetings and revisions produced a DVD master copy.
I designed the DVD cover and the DVD menu graphics.
